AISIN CORPORATION

Aisin Corporation reduce new starter training time by 60% through MR

The Toyota subsidiary introduced Meta Quest headsets to quickly get novices up to speed learning complex procedures and movements.

Boosting training quality and retention with MR

By introducing mixed reality (MR) training, Aisin employees can now instantly understand where they make mistakes – greatly improving the quality of on-site training. With visual feedback, new employees correct their own movements, reducing training time compared to verbal feedback. They haven’t just become proficient more quickly – Aisin also reports improved knowledge retention rates.

The Challenge

At Aisin’s manufacturing lines, new employees could only get up to speed through managers’ verbal feedback and trial and error. Executing the procedures and movements of skilled workers proved to be a time and cost-intensive process. This led to increased training costs and decreased production efficiency. Longer term, there was also the prospect of skill gaps growing as more experienced employees began retiring.
It was also difficult for instructors to figure out individual differences between trainees and the movements they needed to recreate – making it hard to improve the training process. Time was often spent providing verbal cues like, “Try this a bit more”, “Is this good or not?”, “Five seconds slower here.”
As a result, there became a growing demand to break away from small-group on-the-job training at Aisin—and look for new ways to optimize learning and development.

About the company

The Aisin Corporation develops various mobility technologies such as transmissions, electric drive, brakes, vehicle bodies, energy management and safe driving support. It’s a major automotive parts supplier for the Toyota Group.

WHY MR

Why mixed reality

Mixed reality proved to be an effective employee onboarding technology, helping reduce training time for new starters.

Aisin chose Meta Quest 3 MR training for 5 reasons:

  1. With high-resolution color vr passthrough, the entire field of view could be naturally seen with overlaying displays.
  2. High-quality and lightweight virtual reality headsets – even when worn for long periods.
  3. An all-in-one product meant no PC or external camera was required.
  4. Lower costs compared to previous MR devices.
  5. Equipped with hand tracking as standard—enabling high-precision motion tracking without additional sensors.

New employee

“
By using Meta Quest 3 and TechniCapture, I was able to instantly understand where I was making mistakes.

The Solution

Aisin began using the VR training app TechniCapture, operated with a Meta Quest 3 headset, with no external camera or large filming area required. VR training benefits were quickly realised: skilled workers’ procedures and movements were recorded in 3D, then overlaid semi-transparently on the real-time movements of learners. This immersive training made it possible for them to instantly grasp differences and mistakes. It also meant specific feedback and retries could be quickly repeated on site, greatly improving training sessions.
Screen sharing on PC was then made available, enabling a plan–do–check–act loop in which Aisin instructors could comment on learners’ progress. Small group on-the-job training was shifted to device-based learning, reducing training time, and solving the problem of a lack of experienced workers.

Because improvement points can be shown visually, the quality of on-site training has greatly improved, and the speed at which new employees acquire skills has dramatically increased.
